The first proven ancestor of this group was John Watts, a Revolutionary soldier who was born Dec. 14, 1741 in Virginia, or Cumberland County Tennessee. John was married in Virginia during the year 1768, to Mary Johnson, who was born April 25, 1743. They left Virginia, and settled in Overton County, Tennessee. They also resided in Bourbon and Wayne Counties, Kentucky. Also resided in Webster county Missouri. John Watts died in Tennessee in 1830.
Revolutionary War Vet, served in the Continental Army from October 14, 1781.
The Watts family were pioneers of Crawford County and settled in the area about 1818 or 1819. They first settled in Palestine though some of the family later settled in Oblong Township.

Robert Watts, son of John and Mary, was born in Virginia in 1789. He was apparently first married about 1815, wife's name unknown. In 1821, he was married in Crawford County to Nancy York. Robert died near Oblong in 1871. A jeremiah York and Jesse York came to Oblong County with Robert Watts. Robert had one son, by his first wife:
