1933 DODGE COUPE

POTENTATE

po·ten·tate (pōt/n-tāt) n. 1. One who has the power and position to rule over others; a monarch. 2. One who dominates or leads a group or an endeavor.

In the old days they named their hot rods, maybe this is a good name.

"Old coupes and hemis are cool". A quote from a satisfied viewer. A late (426) hemi and a 1933 Dodge coupe. Its going to make a nice hotrod.

If you like cars or bikes you need to visit roadsters.com . Here's a quote I found there.

"Now I've been to church and I've been to the drags, and brothers and sisters, for those of you who have never heard a Hemi on nitro, get thee to the drag strip when the Fuel guys are running. Get thee a pit pass, and bring thyself to a Fuel car being tuned up. Listen to the overwhelming sound of what must be the closest thing you can hear in this life to The Sound Of God. Reach out, brothers and sisters, and bask in the glory of the almighty Hemi. For I have heard the Hemi speak. And I believe! I believe." - Dave Mann

.

When I was in high school I worked for a rancher, moving sprinkler pipe. This coupe was on the hill beyond his hay fields. He never would sell it to me then. I called him 25 years later and he made me a pretty decent deal. I think this is where the hemi will reside.

The Keith Black oil pump is probably over kill for this engine, but it should look more like a gasser that way.

I found this patch panel at a local boneyard. The only other parts left on the car were pretty rotten. This was smashed down when the car was upside down.

The newly made box tubing frame fits pretty well. We must have done a fairly descent job of laying it out. After removing the trunk floor pan everything sits on nicely. I chose the longer 1934 wheelbase of 112". Even at this Gas Coupe elevation the 12 quart oil pan is too close to the ground. The engine is sitting 1.5" offset to the passenger side. It may require that much offset to get a steering shaft around that big Chrysler head. The 4 corner weights for cars show the drivers side is always heavier, by moving the engine and trans to the right it should build a more balanced chassis. I will be modifying the trans crossmember so I can raise the engine 2" to 3". The front body mounts need a bit of trimming so the body will drop flat onto the frame.

Here you can see the way I built the rear frame section. I angled the horizontal bar inward to allow placing the shocks and springs outboard of the frame rails. All in an effort to widen the base so it isn't quite as bad as a backwards tricycle. Plenty of room just behind the axle for the shocks. The shocks that came with the 4 link kit are extremely long. I probably need to look for something shorter.

This is a pretty nice view. Maybe this car won't have fenders after all. If I decide to add fenders, I am leaning towards an earlier model year. I prefer the front fenders that dont wrap around, and down, so far. Something like a 1931 or 1932. The grille shell is not angled back as far as the 1933-1934 however. Maybe I can get some time to work on this car again soon.

The trans output shaft is set at the elevation of the top of the frame rail. I chose to raise the engine so it would look more like a Gasser. The drive shaft will be approximately 30" long.
